The possibility of making pellets on a small scale is what has generated increased interest in pellet heat recently. More and more families are opting to make their own pellets as opposed to purchasing them for several reasons apart from the one stated above. First of all, pellets provide a much cheaper solution and alternative when it comes to heating up your home especially during this cold season. The second reason that has people scrambling for pellet heat is its bio-friendliness. Pellets are made from biomass which makes them extremely echo friendly. A lot of people do not know how to make your own pellets. It’s not as hard as you imagine, in fact it is surprisingly easy.
Basically pellets are compressed masses of biomass. Basically any biomass will work, but wood is the very best when it comes to making combustible pellets. So get some sawdust and make sure that any large pieces of wood in the sawdust are broken down using a hammer mill or a chipper. Next you want to dry the biomass so that the
pelletizing process can take place successfully. The biomass needs to contain 10%-20% moisture in it. Air dry the biomass and if you cannot, use a dryer to get the desired results. Next you want to put the dried biomass through a pellet mill. The biomass has a compound that acts likes a glue which will hold the finished pellet together. Inside the pellet mill, there are rollers that will press the material onto a die. This die has holes tapered like a funnel so when the material is pressed through the die, you get pellets.
This is the easiest way you can make your own pellets. The list below is a recap of the things you need to start making pellets:
1. Biomass: wood chips, sawdust, leaves and even branches are all suitable in making biomass.
2. Access to a hammer mill or wood chipper: To finely churn your biomass.
3. Dryer: For drying the biomass.
4. Pellet Machine: For making the pellets.
